ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its commitment to education, its cutting-edge fundamental research, and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations into practice. The Institute for Learning Sciences and Higher Education chaired by Prof. Manu Kapur is inviting applications for a doctoral position in life sciences education with a focus on narrative-based learning.
Doctoral Position in Life Sciences Education
The Future Learning Initiative at ETH Zurich is recruiting a motivated student for a doctoral project at the intersection of life sciences, education research, and narratives as meaning-making activities. Preliminary research has indicated that, during their first two years at the university, the majority of ETH students do not develop an appropriate interdisciplinary approach to processes on a molecular and systems level. We believe that disciplinary “silo” (departmentalised) instruction is responsible for students’ inadequate cross-disciplinary thinking. In response, this project will: (1) document how the understanding of students on the role of mathematics, physics and chemistry in biological processes evolve during the course of their university studies; and (2) systematically investigate the role of narratives and stories as pedagogical tools in the context of university life science studies. In particular, as research indicates that narratives and stories are central to interpretation and meaning-making, we will investigate whether and how narratives may be useful in facilitating cross-disciplinary thinking at a university level.
A suitable candidate for this position would be someone with a background in biology, biochemistry, or a related life science, an interest in the role of narratives in learning and cognition as well as a passion for education. The candidate should be fluent in German. Familiarity with educational research is helpful but not required. The doctoral training for this position will include training in experimental design and the principles of the learning sciences.
We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: a letter of motivation, CV, and copies of relevant certificates. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.

The duration
of the employment is 3 years. The employment can take place as soon as possible, or after agreement.
