Personalized Health Data Services Manager
to support the biomedical and personalized health research community of ETH Zurich – one of ETH’s strategic scientific areas - with “big data” and computing services. The goal of this position is to coordinate the exchange, processing and management of sensitive biomedical data for various types of personalized medicine projects of ETH researchers in collaboration with other Swiss universities, hospitals, and industry partners. The Personalized Health Data Services Manager is responsible for the management of data access and security and the design, deployment and maintenance of relevant software and analysis workflows on ETH’s new, dedicated biomedical high performance computing and data platform “Leonhard Med”. He or she contributes actively to Leonhard Med’s optimal usage, adoption and integration to the evolving needs of its research community and ensures interoperability with other academic, biomedical IT nodes in Switzerland. In the context of Swiss-wide bodies and initiatives (e.g. SPHN, PHRT), the Personalized Health Data Services Manager interacts with colleagues from other Universities to take an active part in the curation, harmonization and standardization of medical data / metadata and implementation of data access policies for personalized medicine research programmes. In this role, the Personalized Health Data Services Manager interacts closely with research groups in seeking optimal solutions, provides consulting and training and expands our team acting at the interface between the various stakeholders (domain scientists, hospital IT) and other members of SIS (e.g. high performance computing specialists, software engineers).
This position requires a PhD degree in bio- or medical informatics or closely related discipline and a good understanding of biomedical data, relevant technologies and available IT solutions. The successful candidate must have proven experience with data management systems, databases and domain-specific data visualization services (e.g. tranSMART, cBioPortal or openBIS) as well as strong technical skills in supporting relevant biomedical software packages. Experience in using scripting languages (e.g. Bash, R, Python) and working in the Linux / Unix environment as well as some knowledge about network security or high performance and cloud computing is a plus. In addition to honed analytical abilities, this position demands excellent communication, management and self-organization skills as well as the ability to effectively collaborate with domain scientists and IT specialists alike. Moreover, interest in, understanding and awareness of Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) issues of biomedical data is essential to fully perform with the necessary care in this complex working environment. The position is located in Zurich with occasional travel to Basel and other Swiss cities. For now, the contract will be for a period of one (1) year.
