The successful candidate will be hosted by the Institute of Environmental Engineering, ETH Zürich and will also work at Empa, (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research). Position starting from May 2018 or upon agreement. Applications are invited in the Air Quality and Particle Technology group for a
PhD position in Risk assessment of bioaerosols
The research is to investigate the risks posed to human by the bioaerosols, which include airborne bacteria, viruses, fungi, and fragments of these organisms. Even minute amounts of inhaled bioaerosols may cause adverse health impacts such as infectious dieses, sensitization reactions, reactions to toxins or irritants. Information of concentrations, particle size distributions, and sources of bioaerosols is needed to estimate their health risks. The specific tasks include to monitor and characterize the ambient bioaerosols with established methods; to develop novel techniques to measure and identify bioaerosols and to investigate the mechanisms for the bioaerosol health effects.
The suitable candidates have a master level degree in microbiology, immunotoxicology, or related fields with excellent grades. Good experimental capability is of high value. Good command of English is required.
