The Exploration and Environmental Geophysics (EEG) group at ETH Zurich/Switzerland (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) has immediate openings for:
Three PhD positions in exploration geophysics
We seek ambitious and talented PhD candidates for the following three projects:

Project 1: The NASA InSight mission to Mars is the first space mission to land a seismometer on the surface of Mars. This project is centred around the analysis of seismic data collected during the InSight mission. A particular focus is on studying the shallow Martian crust with seismic waves generated by a self-hammering geotechnical tool – the first active-seismic experiment on Mars. We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in data-driven research, geophysical imaging and signal processing. For more information, see http://www.eeg.ethz.ch/research/mars-insight-mission.html and you may contact Dr. C. Schmelzbach (cedric.schmelzbach[at]erdw.ethz.ch).

Project 2: Seismic experimental design for challenging land acquisition. For more information, you may contact Prof. H. Maurer (hansruedi.maurer[at]erdw.ethz.ch).

Project 3: The European Research Council (ERC) funded research project, MAchine for Time Reversal and Immersive wave eXperimentation (MATRIX) to develop of an elastic wave propagation lab. For more information see: http://www.eeg.ethz.ch/research/centre-immersive.html.
The successful candidates for these PhD positions should hold a Master’s degree in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or similar fields. Good knowledge of English is essential. Although not a prerequisite, a basic understanding of German is an advantage.

We offer a dynamic working environment with highly qualified scientists, excellent computational facilities, a large pool of state-of-the-art geophysical equipment. In addition, our group has access to high-performance computing systems owned by ETH. The Exploration and Environmental Geophysics group at ETH Zurich is embedded in a vibrant Earth Science department, which will offer many opportunities for collaborative Projects.

We look forward to your online application until February 16, 2018 including a CV, a motivation letter and the names and addresses of three referees. The selection process starts immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applications to more than one project are possible. Please indicate your priorities in the motivation letter.
