The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich seeks a Senior Scientist in advanced Manufacturing Technologies. The position has 50% responsibility in teaching and 50% on research. The host institutes are the Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF) and the Institute of Virtual Manufacturing (IVP).
Senior Scientist with emphasis in Lecturing in advanced Manufacturing Technologies
Responsibilities of the position include co-teaching and organization of the exercises in Dimensioning; co-teaching and support by the preparation of the lectures in Eng. Materials and production, co-teaching of basic lecture in Manufacturing Science; co-teaching of the other IWF- focus lectures or IVP lectures (Manufacturing 2, Lasertechnology, Principles of FEM based optimization and robustness analysis; Principles of nonlinear Finite-Element-Methods) and supervising of BSc-, MSc and PhD-Students. The level of independence in teaching will depend on the qualification of the candidate. He/she will develop his/her own research programme in the field of “Manufacturing processes” ideally focussing on laser ablation and AM-processes and develop simulation models and model based control of processes.
You are interested in high quality teaching at Bachelor and Master level and research in forming processes and the applied virtual methods. You have a doctoral degree in material modeling of metals or in related fields in solid mechanics with a profound and broad knowledge in manufacturing processes, especially in laser material processing. You have also several years’ experience in teaching and organization of lectures and exercises as well as experience in manufacturing and laser material processing, laser machines, experience in setting up, modelling and measuring of laser manufacturing processes. The three most important scientific publications should also be included in the application.

The Senior Scientist position is possible as a tenure-track or permanent position, depending on your experience and qualification, it even opens up the possibility towards a titular professorship. You will be invited to contribute to the research fields of both institutes, IVP and IWF, and you will be motivated to pursue your own research projects. Candidates with a strong profile in laser material processing from additive or ablative side are preferred, since one of the main research fields will be the development of laser material processing. A good knowledge of material science is important. For the contribution in teaching of the BSc courses German language is required. The starting date is flexible but foreseen to be in the first half of 2018.
