The Chair of Building Physics of ETH Zurich is performing multiscale research to improve the understanding of the interaction of fluids with porous materials. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Multiscale Studies in Building Physics of Empa, we are recruiting a
PhD student on “Coupling LBM pore-scale modelling of multiphase flow to pore-network models”
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated candidate to couple lattice Boltzmann model simulation results with pore-network models allowing upscaling for the determination of the macroscopic fluid transport properties. Although the lattice Boltzmann method is known as a promising computational approach, the computational cost of LBM to study flow in realistic porous materials at the mm to cm scale, remains extremely huge. Pore-network models are a valuable tool for understanding and predicting the fluid behavior of multiphase flows at pore-scale. They are computationally efficient, however they are usually based upon simplified representations of the complex pore structure and are criticized by a lack of accurate representation of the complex geometry of real media. The main task of the PhD candidate is to couple pore-scale lattice Boltzmann modelling to pore-network models to accurately simulate fluid flow in realistic porous media.
The candidate should be a responsible and communicative scientist with a master degree in mechanical, civil or material engineering, physics, computer science, materials science, or similar field. Optimally, the candidate should have a strong background in computational science, fluid mechanics as well as heat and mass transport. A good programming knowledge of either Fortran or C++ is advantageous. The candidate should be proficient in English.
