The Chair of Building Physics of ETH Zurich is performing multiscale research on the interaction of fluids with porous materials. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Multiscale Studies in Building Physics of Empa, we are recruiting a
PhD student on “Lattice Boltzmann modelling of multiphase flow and crystallization in porous materials”
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated candidate that will investigate non-isothermal two-phase flows in porous media on pore-scale, including phase change phenomena like evaporation and crystallization using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). In spite of many attempts in literature to improve the predictive capability of LBM for multiphase flow effects, there has been no work on LBM simulations of in-pore crystallization in complex porous geometries in combination with multiphase flow at pore-scale. The main task of candidate is to develop a LBM model to simulate the crystallization process in fractured and macro-porous media. The PhD student will first extend and further develop the existing in-house code available in the Chair of Building Physics to simulate the crystallization process in simplified porous media. Then, the capability and reliability of the model for simulation of crystallization process in real porous media will be verified by comparing the results with experimental observations.
The candidate should be a responsible and communicative scientist with a master degree in mechanical, civil or material engineering, physics, computer science, materials science, or similar field. Optimally, the candidate should have a strong background in computational science, fluid mechanics as well as heat and mass transport. A good programming knowledge of either Fortran or C++ is advantageous. The candidate should be proficient in English.
