At the Institute of Computational Physics (ICP), physicists, mathematicians and engineers work on applying methods and results from basic research to industrial problems. For more than 20 years, the ICP has been developing multiphysics computer models for industrial applications (e.g. in the field of hydrogen technology, photovoltaics or multiphysics modelling). The ICP operates a laboratory for the development and characterization of optoelectronic devices and optical measurement techniques. Together with its partners from science and industry, the ICP develops solutions in applied research and development. To support our team, we are looking for a
Research Associate for the Mathematical Modelling and Simulation of Electrochemical Cells (100 %)
Mathematical models are used for the design and analysis of efficient and low-emission energy converters. At the ICP, we develop multiphysics models for electrochemical energy devices such as redox flow batteries for stationary storage of renewable energy or fuel cells for automotive applications.

The scope of duties of the position includes the cooperation in a research and third-party funded project, in particular a European project with international consortia:
  • Mathematical model development and implementation
  • Numerical simulation of electrochemical cells, preparation of parameter studies, model validation, analysis and evaluation of measurement data
  • Development of graphical user interfaces for the use of the models by the customer
You have a degree in physics, mathematics or engineering. A good understanding of physics is required to model material, heat and charge transport and experience in the numerical solution of transport equations. Previous knowledge of electrochemistry is a highly-valued skill over other candidates without such competences. Programming skills in a common (scientific) programming language for numerical simulation are advantageous. In addition, you are highly self-motivated, proactive, flexible and enjoy a result-oriented way of working. Professional fluency in English is required, knowledge of German is not indispensable, but may prove useful in discussions when visiting industrial project partners.
