The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

The open position concerns theoretical research at the interface of quantum information theory and quantum many-body physics, with applications to quantum simulation and quantum computing. Particular focus is placed on bosonic and hybrid qubit-boson systems and applications to quantum chemistry. Possible research directions include developing resource-efficient quantum simulation methods, designing quantum learning and benchmarking protocols, and characterizing the capabilities and limitations of realistic quantum computing devices.

The position is embedded in the interdisciplinary Quantum Molecular Dynamics project, a collaboration between PSI and ETH Zurich. The project aims to develop and benchmark quantum simulation methods for challenging problems in molecular quantum dynamics, with a particular focus on mixed-qudit-boson approaches. It brings together expertise in quantum information theory and theoretical chemistry with experimental quantum computing platforms based on trapped ions and superconducting quantum circuits. The position offers opportunities for close collaboration with experimental and theoretical partners at PSI and ETH Zurich.
