The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For the Applied Materials Group within the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging we are looking for a

PhD Student in Materials Science

Your tasks

  • Investigate the texture of additively manufactured AM lightweight alloys using wavelength-resolved neutron imaging and relate it to their mechanical properties
  • Develop and apply a texture tomography inverse problem to reconstruct the crystallographic texture of AM components
  • Conduct neutron imaging and diffraction experiments on AM specimens
  • Validate your results with electron microscopy and mechanical testing
  • Publish results in scientific journals and present findings at international conferences

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in materials science, materials physics, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics or a related field
  • You are interested in experimental work, highly motivated and have excellent communication skills
  • Excellent command of English is required
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python) and an interest in numerical methods, data analysis or inverse problems are an asset
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing is an asset
  • Experience with neutron or X-ray diffraction and imaging techniques is an asset
