The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For the Ion-Trap Quantum Computing Group we are looking for a

Scientist (Tenure Track) in Ion Trap Quantum Computing (80-100%)

Your tasks

  • Contribute, as part of an interdisciplinary and international team, to multiple ion-trapping projects operated at both room and cryogenic temperatures, spanning applications from scalable quantum computing to quantum sensing.
  • Lead a primary research program and develop an independent research line within the scientific scope of the group.
  • Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and coordinate the work of technical staff.
  • Contribute to collaborative and cross-disciplinary projects within the group and the institute.
  • Develop and lead competitive grant proposals to support independent and joint research activities.

Your profile

  • PhD in physics, ideally with a focus on ion trap quantum computation or a closely related field.
  • Several years of postdoctoral research experience with increasing scientific independence.
  • Excellent publication record in quantum science and technology.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, implementation, and operation of quantum science experiments.
  • Strong knowledge of experimental quantum physics techniques.
  • Experience with optical systems (including lasers, detectors, fiber optics, and associated electronics); this is considered an advantage.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills in English; knowledge of German is a plus.
  • Strong track record — or clear potential — in acquiring competitive research funding.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration.
