The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

For the Detectors, Irradiation, Applied Particle Physics Group we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow (Detector Physicist)

Your tasks

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher in the domain of applied particle physics and detection technology to work on the project devoted to remote measurements of the particle radiation environment in the atmosphere. The project goal is to design and develop a portable sensor for neutral and charged energetic particles using state of the art detection technologies applied in nuclear and particle physics. You will be responsible for organization and control for the project flow including detector design and characterization, as well as develop instrument model and qualification routines. Furthermore, you will design data acquisition system for both laboratory tests and in-field applications. You will also have an opportunity to conduct airborne verification campaigns at different radiation environments including analysis of the data.

Approximately 30 % of your working time you will participate in the operation of the Proton Irradiation Facility (PIF) and the Electron Monochromator (EMON). These exposure facilities are used by industry and academia for irradiation tests of electronic components, e.g., for space science missions. You will partially work during nights and weekends to conduct the irradiation campaigns and to support the related user operation.

You will present your scientific results at international conferences and in scientific journals.

Your profile

You are a recently graduated PhD scientist with a strong background in the field of experimental particle physics, detector physics or space physics, combined with a broad expertise in particle detectors, the associated readout electronics and laboratory instruments. You are skilled in writing software codes for data analysis and hardware control. A good command of English and the willingness to learn the local language German are required.

You like to work in a team of scientists and technicians. You are used to work with international user groups, international collaborations, and industrial partners.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
Your employment contract is limited to 2 years with the possibility of a 1-year extension.

For further information, please contact Dr Wojtek Hajdas, phone +41 56 310 42 12 or Dr Malte Hildebrandt, phone +41 56 310 21 45.

Please submit your application online by 27 July 2024 (including list of publications and addresses of referees) for the position as a Postdoctoral Fellow (index no. 3206-01).
