The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Superconductivity Group of the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC), which is located in the premises of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen. 

The Superconductivity Group of the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) is one of the leading European Laboratories for superconducting magnet design and development. We design, manufacture, and test superconducting cables and magnets for fusion applications. We host, manage, and operate SULTAN, the reference test facility for high-field, high-current superconducting cables and insert coils. In the last 20 years, all major superconducting fusion facilities worldwide have qualified their conductors in SULTAN, including ITER, JT60-SA (Japan), SPARC (USA), BEST and CFETR (China), DTT (Italy), and the EUROfusion DEMO. 

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the design and R&D of the future EUROfusion DEMO tokamak, and the design and construction of the EDIPO 2 magnet. The EDIPO 2 test facility will enhance key features of SULTAN, mainly increasing the background magnetic field to 15 T and enlarging the size of the aperture.

Your tasks
  • Electromagnetic and mechanical design of the EDIPO2 magnet
  • Quench detection and protection of EDIPO2
  • Launching and supervising procurement of various EDIPO2 components
  • Design and R&D of superconducting cables for state-of-the-art fusion magnets, mainly for the EUROfusion DEMO tokamak
  • Support of PhD Students
Your profile
  • PhD degree in Physics or Engineering
  • Experience in the design of superconducting magnets and the associated technologies (at least 3 years)
  • Experience in Finite Element Modelling (at least 3 years)
  • You can work independently as well as in a team
  • A proficient level of English is mandatory
  • A basic knowledge of German or willingness to learn German

The conditions of employment are according to the rules of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology. The contract is initially of a limited duration of four years.
