For the Spectroscopy of Quantum Materials we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Fellow
on synchrotron studies of heterostructure quantum materials
Your tasks
Extending the nowadays semiconductor technology, novel heterostructure materials that host novel quantum phenomena for quantum information processing are highly desirable. This includes superconductors and magnetic materials, which when interfaced with semiconductors that possess robust spin-orbit coupling, can lead to the emergence of new quantum phenomena. A notable example is the formation of Majorana fermions, which hold significant promise for their potential applications in the development of qubits. The central aim of this project is to explore the fundamental physics of such systems with advanced synchrotron-radiation spectroscopies as the fundamental basis for their potential applications in quantum technologies. The main spectroscopic techniques in the project will be synchrotron-based angle-resolved soft- and hard-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (ARPES and XPS), providing direct access to electronic structure of buried heterostructures and the chemistry at such heterostructure interfaces. This is complemented with scanning tunnel microscopy (STM) to quantify the atomic-scale surface quality at several stages of the heterostructure sample growth. You will conduct these experiments with most advanced beamlines at the SLS and at the PETRA-III synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany. You will also be embedded in an enthusiastic scientific community investigating various solid-state systems with a variety of experimental techniques including time-resolved ARPES, grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, muon spectroscopy, neutron scattering and a plethora of other cutting-edge techniques accessible at PSI. You will actively interact with PSI internals, external theorists, beamline scientists and industrial collaborators.
Your profile
You have completed a PhD in solid state physics or materials science. You have a good theoretical knowledge in fundamental solid state physics and hands-on experience with experimental instrumentation and data processing. You are familiar with photoelectron or related spectroscopic techniques. Experience in physics of thin films, PLD or MBE growth, knowledge of data processing in the Matlab environment will be an advantage. You are interested in operating and instrumental development of advanced synchrotron radiation instrumentation and enjoy working within a motivated scientific team as well as with external users. Excellent skills of communication in English are essential in the international environment of PSI.
