The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

Proton Beam Diagnostics
Your tasks
The HIPA facility has the world’s most powerful DC proton beam whereby even fractional beam losses have to be kept at a minimum. Thus, the understanding of the beam properties is of uttermost importance. As a result instrumentation is a challenge, it must be robust and extremely well adapted to the perils of the environment; most traditional solutions don’t last. One aspect of this project will focus on measuring the HIPA ion source beam properties with an existing 4D-emittance meter which will be installed at the offline test stand. From these measurements the beam’s transverse and temporal emittance profile can be determined and improved upon; hence enabling the quantification of any later improvements. Such improvements will be vital for reducing the beam losses within the accelerators in the near future. This will give you the opportunity to directly work on systems scheduled to be installed early in 2024. You will support the beam physics group in developing the software and hardware required to perform these measurements in a laboratory environment, directly interfacing with the test stand beam line hardware and controls systems. You will also participate in beam optics analysis with code written during this project by the beam physics group (together with you), giving you a solid introduction into beam related physics.
Your profile
  • You are a student of physics or engineering with some coding experience, and you are at least in your penultimate year of undergraduate study (minimum 4 semesters)
  • You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis
We offer
