The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

For being part of the Soft Matter Group, part of the Laboratory of Neutron Scattering and Imaging LNS at SINQ, we are looking for a
PhD Student
In physics of soft condensed matter
Your tasks
The PhD student will develop experimental and data analysis techniques to infer the 3D organization of fluids under flow. This project is a collaboration among the Swiss Light Source SLS and the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source SINQ that aims to apply small angle scattering and grating interferometry techniques, as well as rheology, for measuring the structure of fluids.

  • Develop mathematical models for the 3D scattering of soft matter under flow
  • Collaborate with novel ideas for experiments at SINQ and SLS
  • Optimize and develop data analysis pipelines
  •  Analyse and publish results from scattering and imaging experiments
Your profile
  • Master degree in physics, mathematics or computer science
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Excellent programming skills (python) and affinity to statistics
  • Interest in lab work, soft matter physics and large scale facility experiments
  • Flexibility to travel and to perform beamtimes
  • Solution-oriented work attitude is essential
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
