The ultracold neutrons UCN Physics Group is looking for a
PhD Student
in fundamental physics to work on the n2EDM experiment
Your tasks
A new project to search for a neutron electric dipole moment - n2EDM - started at PSI, searching for a signal of beyond Standard Model physics. The new experimental apparatus is being set up at the ultracold neutron source. Your tasks will be:
  • You will work on the setup of the laser based mercury co-magnetometer, an essential component of the new spectrometer
  • You will participate in the setup of the experiment and commissioning of the n2EDM spectrometer
  • You will take an important role in measuring dominant systematic effects arising from the usage of the mercury magnetometer in the n2EDM experiment
  • You will prepare and pursue the analysis of the data to study mercury induced systematic effects 
The PhD project is located at PSI with graduation from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH in Zurich, Department of Physics.
Your profile
We seek a talented and ambitious candidate who is highly motivated to work on this competitive project in a well-established research team and within an international collaboration.
  • Master degree in Physics
  • High interest in fundamental physics and motivation to work on an exceptional experiment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Basic programming skills are required
  • Good level of English (C1) as working language in spoken and written from is mandatory
  • Practical experience in experimental work with lasers, optics and hardware setup will be considered as an asset
  • Knowledge of German or willingness to quickly learn German is a plus
