For the Center for Proton Therapy CPT we are looking for a
PhD Student
High and ultra-high dose-rate delivery in a clinical proton therapy setting
Your tasks
You will investigate how we can practically realise fast and ultra-fast treatments at one of the clinical gantries of the CPT at PSI, Gantry 2. You will test experimentally different options to decrease the treatment time including but not limited to high beam currents, low energy switching times, and treatment planning optimisation strategies. You will consider the following three main clinical scenarios:
  • Moving tumours treated at our centre proposing to treat them in breath-hold instead of with other motion-mitigation modalities.
  • Hypofractionated treatments with more dose per treatment session, which is not usually performed at our centre
  • FLASH treatments of a deep-seated tumour (a first proof-of-principle for proton therapy). 
The project will be based at the PSI’s CPT and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) will award the PhD degree.
Your profile
You hold a Master degree in Physics or Engineering. You have achieved experience in at least one of the following fields: particle / nuclear physics, medical physics or accelerator physics (e.g. during your Master's thesis). You have an experimental background and some experience in programming (for example in Matlab, C++, or python). Good communication skills in English are essential; German communication skills (at least at a basic level) would be an advantage.
