The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. The Future Circular Collider Study FCC explores different designs of circular colliders for the post-LHC era. Reaching higher energies and unprecedented luminosities would allow us to explore the fundamental laws of nature and probe yet unexplained observations. A circular particle accelerator is a viable option to achieve this goal within the 21st century. Building such a machine requires a well-focused technology R&D program, the development of entirely new technologies and the industrialization of novel materials, and a committed science community.

Applied Physicist / Engineer
High-field superconducting dipole magnets
Your tasks
You will be part of a young research group, joining the team at the establishment of a new superconducting-magnet laboratory at PSI. Your work will contribute to the design and construction of an innovative high-field superconducting dipole magnet using Nb3Sn technology. In particular your areas of activity will include:
  • Conceptual design (electromagnetic, mechanical) of high-field magnets
  • Specification, procurement, and commissioning of manufacturing infrastructure
  • Establishment and continuous development of manufacturing processes
  • Instrumentation and metrology of superconducting coils
Your profile
You have a Masters or PhD degree in applied physics, electrical or mechanical engineering, and several years of experience in the design and construction of superconducting magnets. You routinely used ANSYS mechanical or similar tools. Ideally, you have worked on Nb3Sn accelerator magnets before. As a team-oriented and communicative person you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary group. You assume responsibility, show initiative and combine creativity and out-of-the-box thinking with pragmatism and results-orientation. Good knowledge of English is mandatory; knowledge of German is a plus.
