The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2100 people.

(ESR 7) Combustion performance and emissions of unconventional fuels
Your tasks
Identify a (or multiple) solutions for the exploitation of unconventional fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, bio-derived liquid fuels, ammonia and low calorific industrial off-gases as alternative fuels for micro gas turbines. The potential fuels shall be identified, characterized and grouped according to suitable selection criteria.

The main tasks are:
  • Selection and characterization of fuels
  • Selection and (re-)design of suitable combustion techniques
  • Proof of concept(s) in a micro gas turbine set-up The PhD project will be performed at PSI with graduation from ETH Zurich, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering
Your profile
The applicants must be in the first 4 years of their research career and must have a master degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or Physics/Chemistry. The successful applicant should not have been living in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. Required background: Advanced understanding of fundamentals of reactive flows (chemical kinetics, aerodynamics) and interest/basic knowledge in optical/laser based measurement techniques. In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences. They need to follow the training programme provided in NextMGT project.
