The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. For PSI operates the large research facility SwissFEL, one of the five free-electron lasers world-wide which generate hard X-Ray pulses with durations in the femtosecond range. This requires a highly precise timing reference which is distributed to various systems in the facility, ranging from RF systems with frequencies between 3 and 12 GHz, mode-locked lasers, and arrival-time diagnostics for electron bunches and laser pulses. As a timing reference, both ultra-stable RF signals and pulses from mode-locked reference lasers are used, and distributed in length-stabilized optical fibers.

For the Timing and Synchronization Group we are looking for a
RF-Engineer or Physicist

Your tasks
The group Timing and Synchronization operates a complex electro-optic synchronization system. Your task is the consolidation of this system with the goal to achieve reliability, low maintenance and improved stability. This comprises development of new systems, operation of existing systems and their documentation. Interdisciplinary cooperation is an important element at PSI and you actively support it. Your task will include:
  • Elaborate new concepts and techniques for femtosecond synchronization
  • Design and realization of phase measurements for optical and RF signals
  • Improvement of low-noise and low-drift optical and RF readout electronics
  • Development and comissioning of phase-locked loops for femtosecond lasers
  • Embedding of the existing optical event-system into the systems
  • Agile reaction to new requirements of experimentators
Your profile
You have a degree in electrical engineering, physics or similar science. Preferably, with a PhD degree. Furthermore, you are an expert in the field of precise electro-optical signals and their utilization for time measurements in the femtosecond range. As a proactive and open personality you maintain good contacts with various groups and you feel comfortable in a heterogeneous environment. Good knowledge of German and English language complete your profile. Ideally, you already have experience with the work at accelerator facilities and synchronization systems for free-electron lasers.
