The Accelerator Feedbacks and Measurement Systems Group is developing and operating high-end FPGA/SoC-based real-time feedback and measurement systems for different particle accelerators at PSI. For the next major PSI project, a state-of-the art low-emittance electron storage ring with 288m circumference called SLS (Swiss Light Source) 2.0 generating ultra-bright X-Rays, we are looking for a
You will participate in the simulation, development, commissioning and operation of state-of-the-art FPGA/SoC based feedback systems to stabilize particle accelerator beams. This includes a new fast global orbit feedback for the SLS, where a redundant centralized FPGA/SoC based feedback processor will stabilize the electron beam position with 10+ kHz correction rate, using 100+ RF- and X-ray based position monitors and 100+ electromagnetic actuators. In collaboration with other physicists and engineers, you will develop and implement robust feedback and adaptive feed-forward algorithms as well as online and offline analysis software and models. You will participate in the characterization of the new measurement and feedback systems at the accelerator, including automated tuning of feedback parameters using e.g. machine learning techniques. You will also contribute to the operation, improvement and incremental upgrade of existing measurement and feedback systems.
You are a physicist or engineer with a master or PhD degree and you have experience in the field of real-time feedbacks and digital signal processing, preferably for particle accelerators or comparable large-scale research or industrial systems. In addition you have several years of experience in implementing complex algorithms for embedded real-time systems in well-structured and maintainable C/C++ code, preferably also in VHDL. You are familiar with the technology and physics of particle accelerators including beam optics or you are able and willing to acquire this knowledge rapidly. You have at least basic knowledge of electronics and FPGA technology. Knowledge of MAD, Python, Matlab, Simulink, machine learning techniques, and the EPICS control system is a plus.
You are a hands-on person and enjoy applying your skills and knowledge to realize innovative and efficient solutions that work very reliably. Your excellent communication and organization skills, collaborative spirit and high flexibility enables you to work as a project team member, and as a leader of smaller sub-projects. You specify and delegate tasks to other team members or service groups. You enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of physicists, engineers and technicians, and you look forward to expanding your knowledge and skills beyond your present field of work.
