Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The Postdoctoral researchers will participate in the project “Groundwater Spring Watch (GW-Swatch)” to understand and forecast groundwater spring dynamics and to assess the impact of climate extremes on groundwater systems. In the project, we aim to develop a method to (i) systematically analyze the sensitivity of groundwater spring systems in Switzerland to extreme events and (ii) forecast spring behavior. The results from the project will be used to develop an operational information system, helping water decision makers to make short- and long-term decisions on the management of groundwater springs. The immediate research results will be brought to collaborators and practitioners.
We are looking for two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers with interests in quantitative analysis and modeling of springs.
- Postdoc 1 will focus on data analysis, classification, assessment of spring sensitivity to hydroclimatic extremes and short-term forecasting
- Postdoc 2 will focus on physically based long-term modelling under climate change scenarios, stress testing and mitigation.
Both positions will work closely together and will jointly contribute to the database and outreach activities. This will help water resources management in a changing world.
Successful candidates should have a PhD degree in one of the following disciplines, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science and engineering, and water management. She/he is required to have skills in hydro(geo)logical and/or environmental modelling and scientific communication (including paper and report writing, stakeholder collaborations). Proficiency in English is essential. Experience of working with stakeholders in water resources management is highly desirable.
The positions are available for 2 years. The preferred starting date is 1 March 2027 but is negotiable. The postdoctoral researchers will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf, supervised by Prof. Dr Mario Schirmer and Dr Christian Moeck.
