Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The department of Process Engineering (Eng) invites applications for a

Postdoctoral Researcher on the Modelling of Micropollutant Removal from Wastewater by Activated Carbon (m/f/d)

Job description: Granular activated carbon has proven to be an efficient technology to remove micropollutants from treated wastewater. To optimally design and operate these systems, an in-depth understanding of the elimination process is required. Mathematical modelling is an excellent way to formulate, foster, and test our process knowledge. Therefore, this project aims for novel approaches to model the complexity of the elimination process by combining machine-learning algorithms with first-principles modelling (hybrid modelling).
The postdoctoral researcher will be part of an interdisciplinary expert team and work with existing long-term as well as high-resolution datasets of granular activated carbon filter operation. Thereby, the aims of the modelling efforts are threefold:

  • Development of a hybrid model for the prediction of effluent concentrations in granular activated carbon systems, accounting for physical and biological processes
  • Leveraging the interplay of data-driven and mechanistic modelling techniques to gain new insights and advance our understanding of micropollutant removal processes
  • Investigating applicability, opportunities and limitations of hybrid modelling in general

The successful and highly motivated candidate holds a PhD in environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental sciences, or similar. She/He must have modelling experience with mechanistic approaches, including programming skills (e.g., Python, Julia, Matlab, R). Furthermore, the candidate should be familiar with system modelling in general and with basic concepts of process engineering. Specific process knowledge in wastewater treatment, activated carbon systems as well as with micropollutant removal processes is highly desirable. Experience in data-driven modelling and in handling large datasets is beneficial. Furthermore, we appreciate excellent spoken/written English, good organizational skills, and an independent working style.
