Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). The Departments Environmental Chemistry (UCHEM) and Urban Water Management (SWW) located in Dübendorf (Zurich) offer a
PhD position in Environmental Engineering

or in Environmental Chemistry in the project mikroMISCH - Micropollutants in Combined Sewer Overflows and Rainwater Discharges. The overall goal is to gain new insight into the dynamics of micropollutants discharged with untreated water into the environment [peak concentrations, duration and frequency]. The project benefits from the availability of the unique mobile HRMS platform MS2field and involves the following tasks 1) retrofit MS2field sample collection and preparation to increase sampling frequency; 2) select representative sites (meta-analysis) and perform field campaigns at a maximum of three locations; 3) evaluate patterns of micropollutants (preselection of compounds for target analysis and non-target analysis time permitting).

The project is fully funded by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment for a duration of four years. The start is planned for October 2020. The position will be affiliated with the research groups of Christoph Ort and Heinz Singer embedded in the two departments SWW and UCHEM, which emphasizes the interdisciplinary character of this project. The PhD degree will be awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. While this is a research-only position, a maximum of 10% time may be committed to teaching or supporting other activities within Eawag.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent person with a passion for science. Candidates for this position should have a strong interest in analytical chemistry and hold either an MSc degree in environmental engineering or environmental chemistry. Ideally, candidates demonstrate knowledge in chemical analysis and programming as well as statistical analysis (time series and cluster analyses). Experience with hardware development and programmable logic controllers are an asset. Fluency in English is required.
