Postdoctoral Scholar position in Anammox Process ecology
(Microbial Ecology / Metagenomics / Process Stability)

The successful candidate will be part of an SNF-funded Sinergia project (three postdocs and one PhD) which seeks to understand the biochemical and ecological functioning of mixed microbial populations in anammox treatment of wastewater and to characterize its dependence on environmental conditions and microbial composition. The final goal of the project is to develop an optimized nitrogen removal process for full-scale main-stream wastewater treatment using nitritation-anammox systems.

The successful candidate will conduct disturbance experiments with experimental reactors to characterize resilience and resistance of anammox consortia under variable environmental conditions. At Eawag you will join the Microbial Ecology Group but you will also collaborate closely with the other research groups in the Sinergia consortium, i.e. the Department of Process Engineering of Eawag (Dr Adriano Joss), the Laboratory for Air Pollution/Environmental Technology at EMPA (Dr Joachim Mohn) and the Aquatic and Isotope Biogeochemistry Group at the University of Basel (Prof. Dr Moritz Lehmann).

We are seeking outstanding and highly motivated candidates with demonstrated experience in the microbial ecology of wastewater processes and a strong publication record. Candidates should hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline. A background in metagenomics and/or metatranscriptomics and associated data analysis techniques as well as experience with experimental work on wastewater processes are desirable.
