PostDoc position in 3D X-ray histopathology of colorectal tumors

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
Empa’s Centre for X-ray Analytics develops X-ray analytical and imaging methods for understanding materials structure in material, life- and medical sciences.

The PostDoc research will be part of a multi-center research project on applying and combining multi-modal 2D and 3D imaging methods for understanding metastasis and tumor deposit formation in colorectal tumors. Specifically, the work will focus on optimizing 3D X-ray virtual histology methods by phase-contrast micro-CT and corresponding image processing techniques also with view on combining it with other 2D and 3D techniques such as H&E and LSFM. The work will be done in close cooperation and synergy with an already running PhD project. Partly existing database will be used and extended to develop image processing pipelines and models for the automated evaluation of 3D data sets towards answering clinical research questions. The project is highly interdisciplinary and is carried out in close collaboration with imaging, image analysis and clinical experts from Switzerland and abroad. Involvement in other closely related research activities of the imaging group at the X-ray Center is also foreseen.

Your contribution

  • Application and further development of 3D digital histopathology by X-ray phase contrast micro-CT
  • Development of image processing and ML tools and models for the automated identification and quantification of clinically relevant morphological features in metastatic colorectal tumors and lymph nodes
  • Data management, data treatment

Your profile

If you would like to make a major impact on 3D X-ray based digital pathology and corresponding image processing methods, you are highly motivated, a team player, communicative and passionate working in an interdisciplinary field and fulfill the following criteria:
  • Completed PhD in X-ray imaging or in a field very closely related
  • Have a very solid background in the technical and theoretical details of X-ray imaging and in phase contrast techniques
  • Have very good lab skills
  • Have preferably experience in the biomedical domain and in image processing
