Post-doc in the field of high through-put PVD process control and synthesis applied to compositional gradient thin film libraries

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures in Thun explores the possibility of high throughput materials development. In the context of our Materials Vision Tech initiative, we focus on multi-element gradient thin film systems, i.e. their rapid deposition and automated multi-technique characterization. Within the Swiss-Polish innovation project “DepoIon”, we develop physical vapor deposition (PVD) process control for solid state battery relevant material coatings.

Your tasks

You will work on basic science topics as well as on applied research projects funded by InnoSuisse. Coating libraries will be synthesized using reactive and/or HiPIMS sputtering and microwave assisted deposition techniques. You will exploit various diagnosis tools that characterize the deposition environment, investigate their properties and microstructure of the deposited thin films by cutting edge analytical techniques, such as scanning/transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography or scanning probe microscopy.

Your profile

You hold a PhD in Physics, Materials Science or similar. A high level of motivation to work in close collaboration with industry, experimentalists and an international, multidisciplinary research team is essential. Experience in plasma diagnosis techniques such as Langmuir Probes, Retarding Field Energy analysis or ion flux meters would be an asset.

Our offer

We offer an international, highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure for personal and professional growth. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including clean rooms, several PVD chamber systems for thin film processing, high level of materials analysis facilities such as XRDs, SEMs, FIBs, TEM, APT; as well as in-situ micromechanical instrumentation. You will be working in Thun (near Bern). The city is situated in a beautiful area near the mountains in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The starting date is as soon as possible or upon mutual agreement. The project duration is 1-3 years.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
