Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The Center for X-ray Analytics develops X-ray methodologies for understanding materials structure in materials science. Our core activities is the development X-ray based methods focusing on the evaluation of the structure – property relationship in applications such as biomedicine and space.
In the frame of an ESA project interfacing research and industrial needs, we are looking for a postdoc holding a PhD in material science, physics or chemistry, with a clear link to X-ray based analytical methods, especially to X-ray diffraction and even more specifically to XRD-PDF (pair distribution function). The project is linked to crystalline and amorphous alloys, and in an industrial context to process design by establishing the structure-property relationship. We expect the candidate's enthusiasm for X-ray based analytical methods and Space sciences!
Your tasks
- R&D in the domain of X-ray analytics, with a focus on X-ray diffraction and scattering (XRD, XRD-PDF), data analysis and modelling for partially crystalline material systems
- Developing lab-based X-ray multimodalities: X-ray diffraction & imaging
- presentation of scientific results through publications and on conferences
- active interactions and support of scientific collaborators and industrial partners
Your profile
- PhD degree in chemistry, physics or materials science
- deep knowledge in X-ray diffraction and scattering methods (XRD, XRD-PDF)
- additional knowledge in X-ray imaging and microscopy techniques is a big plus
- striving for scientific excellence and being an independent researcher
- experienced in project management and writing scientific publications
- fluent in English, German would be a plus, enjoying a multicultural environment
Our offer
We offer this postdoc position at a research institution with excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surrounding. The position is available for the 1st of October 2025 or upon agreement and will be initially limited to one year with a performance based possibility for contract extension.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
