Postdoc Position on Sustainable Battery Electrode Manufacturing

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
Empa’s Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion focuses on materials and device innovation for sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies.

This postdoc position is part of a national collaborative project involving two major industrial partners — leading suppliers of battery materials and manufacturing equipment for gigafactories. The project is funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.

Your tasks

The research project focuses on the solvent-free manufacturing of battery electrodes to improve the ecological footprint of lithium-ion batteries. You will perform microstructural characterization of dry coated electrodes using physical and machine learning based methods and the electrochemical assessment of the electrodes in battery cells.

Your profile

We are seeking a highly motivated team player who thrives in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment. You should be ready to work independently and contribute to a vibrant international research community starting in October 2025. The ideal candidate possesses a PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or related fields. Prior experience in battery research and proficiency in Python programming is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Our offer

You will join a dynamic young international research group working in state-of-the-art battery research facilities hosted in Empa's brand new laboratory building. The lab operates its own X-ray diffractometers, X-ray photoelectron, FTIR, and Raman spectrometers, argon ion mills and electron microscopes, and the unique Aurora robotic battery materials research platform equipped with more than 1500 battery cycling channels and automated workflow and data management capabilities.

Empa is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from female researchers and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. We believe diversity drives innovation and scientific excellence.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
We look forward to receiving your online application, including a one-page letter of motivation, curriculum vitae (CV), degree certificates with academic transcripts (including grades), and at least two reference letters. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
