Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
To join our
Cellulose & Wood Materials Laboratory, we are currently seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for a postdoctoral position (80%-100%) in the field of stimuli-responsive, multi-functional polymer nanocomposites.
Project Overview
Multiple functionalities such as selective curing, self-healing, and debonding can be incorporated into conventional polymer materials and activated through external stimuli as needed. This project aims to develop such stimuli-responsive, multi-functional epoxies by incorporating various nano- and microparticles. These materials have a wide range of applications, including the construction and transportation sectors, and promote circularity. This project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) through the Spark 2024 award, which aims to support unconventional and innovative ideas.
Your tasks
As a postdoc, you will develop stimuli-responsive epoxy nanocomposites with multiple functionalities. Beyond core research, your role encompasses project management, including coordinating interdisciplinary teams and managing timelines. Your responsibilities also include scientific publications and continuous improvement, making this position dynamic and impactful.
Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, independent, and communicative individual capable of bridging expertise between materials science, chemistry, and laser physics. You hold a Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, or a related field, with a strong background in epoxy formulations and nanocomposites. You should be well-experienced in dispersing nanomaterials in polymers, imaging techniques (SEM & TEM), and material characterization (DSC, DMA, UV-vis spectrometer, FTIR, rheometer). While an interest in fiber-reinforced polymeric composite manufacturing and mechanical characterization is advantageous, it is not a strict requirement. We expect a track record of high-quality scientific publications and excellent communication and writing skills in English. Proficiency in German is beneficial.
Our offer
Join a dynamic, international team focused on cellulose and wood materials at our leading research institution in the Zurich area. Empa provides outstanding infrastructure and an interdisciplinary work environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. As a team member, you will gain access to numerous opportunities for professional development, networking, and collaboration with experts in the field. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension, starting from March 2025 or upon agreement.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
