Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The
Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics is internationally known for innovative research in the field of thin-film photovoltaics and battery technologies. The Laboratory holds several world records for energy conversion efficiency of thin-film solar cells on various substrates. One developing research topic is
thin-film solid-state batteries, which can be used not only as stand-alone devices but also offer a 2D geometry for investigating battery materials and new device concepts.
Your tasks
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate, who is eager to pursue hands-on, exploratory research on solid-state batteries with a particular focus on thin-film materials deposited by physical vapor deposition methods. This includes investigations of new conversion-type and intercalation-type cathode materials, inter-layers for efficient Li plating, fabrication & characterization of novel battery device architectures, such as anode-free and multi-stack batteries.
Your profile
- MSc in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or similar
- Motivation and drive to conduct independent, interdisciplinary research in the battery field
- Experience in electrochemistry, thin-film technologies, and/or physical vapor deposition methods is advantageous
- Readiness to operate sophisticated equipment, including maintenance and user training
- Diligent working attitude including precise record keeping
- Highly motivated, communicative and interested in exploratory research
Our offer
The work will be carried out at Empa - Dübendorf, near Zurich, and should eventually lead to a PhD degree from ETH Zürich. Expected starting date is early 2025 or upon mutual agreement.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
