Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The Laboratory for Magnetic and Functional Thin Films is focused on magnetic materials, multilayer thin films and devices.
Your tasks
Magnetic thin film systems play a crucial role in numerous applications, including data storage and sensors. Our research vision aims to expand our expertise in the development and characterization of novel magnetic multilayer systems, with a particular emphasis on their application in sensor technologies. In addition to acquiring and conducting fundamental scientific projects, we are dedicated to fostering strong collaborations with industrial partners. Our goal is to advance beyond fundamental research and actively participate in the development of prototype applications on an international scale.
Your profile
We are looking for a candidate with a Ph.D. degree in experimental physics or a closely related discipline, possessing several years of experience in conducting both basic and applied research, managing research projects, and preferably having industrial experience. Additionally, the successful candidate should have expertise in the following areas:
- Designing, fabricating, and characterizing magnetic multilayer materials
- Utilizing cleanroom facilities for device fabrication
- Working in the field of magnetic sensors or other applications of magnetic thin film systems
Our offer
We offer a highly stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including ultra-high vacuum (UHV) sputter deposition systems, a range of magnetic characterization tools such as home-built high-vacuum magnetic force microscopy systems, an evico magnetics Kerr microscope, a Quantum Design PPMS, and a Lakeshore 8600 series VSM. Access to additional instrumentation like SEM, TEM, FIB, He-FIB, XRD, XRR, XPS, ToF-SIMS, and probe stations is readily available through other Empa laboratories. Moreover, our collaboration with the IBM BRNC provides access to advanced clean rooms, while the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) offers cutting-edge x-ray magnetic characterization methods.
The position is available upon agreement and will initially be limited to three years. Contract extension and tenure evaluation will be performance based.
