Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
Our Center for X-ray Analytics is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge X-ray analytical and imaging methods to gain insight into the structure of various materials. We focus on a wide range of applications, including materials science, life sciences, and biomedical translational research. A PhD position is currently available within our center. The research project focuses on the role of spinal ligaments in the process of spine degeneration and aging. The project aims to correlate 3D structural and histological changes of ligaments with biomechanical and clinical factors.
Your tasks
As a PhD candidate, you will play a key role in gaining new insights into the degenerative processes of the spine, as well as investigating the role of spinal ligaments in the etiology and progression of spinal stenosis. A critical aspect of this project is the use of advanced X-ray analysis tools, including micro and nano X-ray tomography, as well as the application of image processing and analysis techniques and the correlation of 3D histomorphological findings with biomechanical behavior.
Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated person who is ready to start her/his research career and add value to this highly interdisciplinary project with her/his own expertise. The ideal candidate should have a background in biomedical engineering, biomedical image analysis and/or processing, or orthopedic biomechanics. Previous experience in microscopy, histology, or orthopedic biology would be an advantage, as would experience in X-ray micro-CT. Very good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory, knowledge of German would be an advantage.
Our offer
We offer an international, highly stimulating research environment with an excellent infrastructure for personal and professional development. As a part of our team, you will have the chance to contribute to groundbreaking research and develop innovative techniques in X-ray analysis. By joining our center, you will have the opportunity to work on a project in collaboration with the Spine Biomechanics group and clinicians at the Balgrist University Hospital, exchanging knowledge and ideas. This unique interdisciplinary environment will provide you with invaluable insight into the medical applications of X-ray analysis and imaging. You will have the opportunity to work on a project that has the potential to impact healthcare and improve patient outcomes.
The work will be carried out at Empa Dübendorf, near Zurich, within a collaborative project between Empa and Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich. The position is immediately available or upon mutual agreement.
