Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

In line with Empa’s mission, the Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.

Within TSL, the Advancing Life Cycle Assessment Group (ALCA), is looking for a

Life Cycle Assessment Specialist (80-100%)

taking care of life cycle assessment (LCA) - related modelling activities in projects related to the construction sector, in close collaboration with national and regional public authorities in Switzerland, as well as with private companies.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Your Tasks

A first project deals with the establishment of basic data and models for an increased use of recycled construction materials in the road sector, taking into account regional contexts and their implications from an ecological point of view.

In a second project, alternative construction techniques and materials, again in the field of road construction, shall be compared with today's construction practices (using steel and concrete), and their sustainability potentials quantified.

The successful candidate will develop LCA models allowing to quantify the environmental sustainability of the technological development activities. For this, he or she will further develop the LCA methodology to improve existing screening options, broaden the underlying database and contribute to the establishment of guidance materials (reports, presentations, workshops) in close collaboration with the various partners involved in the various projects.
