PhD Position on Spectroscopy of 2D Materials for X-ray Photonics
The excitation of 2D materials, in which the lattice parameter is resonant to the fluorescence may lead to distributed feedback and thus to superradiance. This research aims exploring an original approach towards the demonstration of a compact X-ray laser.
You investigate crystals of tuned stoichiometries as X-ray resonators. The atomic spacing and structure are matched to the wavelength of fluorescence. Different techniques of preparation are compared such as pulsed laser deposition and magnetron sputtering. You will test the optical performance of these materials pumping their fluorescence by means of electrons and/or photon sources. Teaching assignments at the University are part of the doctoral position. The research is carried out at the Empa while the PhD thesis is presented at the University of Zurich.
You completed a MSc in materials science or solid state chemistry. You are familiar with deposition techniques and the basics of spectroscopy, atom physics and physical chemistry. You can use software for data processing, such as Igor Pro, Matlab and Origin.
