Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.
The Laboratory for Biointerfaces performs material-related research and focuses on understanding, characterizing and steering interactions of biomolecules, bacteria and human cells at surfaces for materials-based healthcare solutions.

The Laboratory for Biointerfaces offers
one PhD position in the area of Bacteria and Materials interactions

The scope of the position is to investigate the efficacy and applicability of probiotics to treat biofilm-associated wound infections. The goal here isto define and establish formulations containing probiotics that optimally support wound healing and possess a long-term stability. The work will contribute to a fundamental understanding of the correlation between the formulated material properties and the bioactivity of the encapsulated probiotics. The tasks include selection of suitable probiotic strains, identification of carrier materials and their fabrication strategies, and assessment of bioactivity and stability of the encapsulated probiotics.

You have completed a university degree (diploma or masters) and hold a Master degree or equivalent in materials science, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology or related disciplines. You must have a strong background in materials science or related fields. Good knowledge in encapsulation of bacteria, hydrogel formulation, material characterization techniques is of advantage.

You are highly motivated with eager-to-learn spirit and problem solving skills. You are interested in in the research topic and interdisciplinary work, and a team player with excellent communication skills. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory. Knowledge of German is advantageous.
