The Materials and Systems research group is actively involved in the reduction of railway noise and vibrations. The team aims for a better fundamental understanding of the entire superstructure in close collaboration with the Swiss federal railways and the responsible Federal Offices. We use state-of-the art modelling tools, and we are well equipped to perform advanced experimental investigations.
Your task is the development of practical numerical models for the static and dynamic behaviour of railway ballast, and its interaction with the environment. To achieve this, you will:
define homogenized material models for efficient finite element models of the railway superstructure
investigate the influence of the ballast on railway dynamics and acoustics
validate the models experimentally based on field measurements using standard measurement equipment.
We are looking for a highly motivated, open-minded and flexible person to join our international team. The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, (Applied) Physics, or similar disciplines. You should have a background in
finite element modelling of structural dynamics (Ansys or other commercial software)
discrete element modelling
advanced material elasticity (linear and non-linear dynamics)
signal analysis tools (Matlab, Python, LabVIEW…)
Hands-on knowledge of experimental work is an asset.
The candidate should have experience in writing publications and should possess good presentation skills. Fluency in English is required. The position is immediately available and will be funded for a period of 18 months.
