Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

In line with Empa’s mission, its Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.


Within TSL’s Critical Materials and Resource Efficiency Group (CARE), we are looking for a

Scientist in the field of Societal Metabolism and Circular Economy (100%)

The primary aim of the CARE group is to characterize the anthropogenic mine consisting of novel materials and emerging technology applications and in providing guidance for the design of more sustainable material management systems focusing on materials recovery in different societal contexts, including developing countries.


The candidate will support research projects in the areas of recovery of scarce metals from end-of-life vehicles andcollection, transportation and recycling of Li-Ion batteries from the automotive sector.He or she will futhermore support the conformity assessment of Swiss e-waste recycling operators.

The candidate should have a strong background in environmental or sustainability science or related disciplines. He or she should be capable to develop computational models (e.g., stock and flow models) in the above mentioned fields. The candidate should have very good written and spoken command in German and English with additional language skills being an asset.
