Reliable scientific data on the chemical composition of the atmosphere is crucial for understanding climate change and for a sound assessment of the environmental players and impacts. Therefore, we implemented observations of carbon dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and ozone in data spare regions such as Chile (since 2013), Viet Nam (since 2014) and Kyrgyzstan (since 2016) to improve the spatial global coverage of sound data. These time series in highly diverse environments provide crucial and unique information which is expected to be exploited by innovative data analysis and atmospheric transport models.
Similarly, highly unique, continuous δ13C-CO2 andδ18O-CO2 isotope ratio data is available since 2008 from our high-Alpine measurement station Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. The isotopic composition of CO2 contains valuable information about the various CO2 source and sink processes in Central Europe. The evaluation of these data is part of the European Union’s project RINGO which strives for cutting-edge science and its transition into operationally run monitoring networks.
The successful candidate will fully profit from this wealth of data. He or she will employ and develop statistical tools, machine learning algorithms, and atmospheric transport models for the exploitation of the uniqe, high-quality time series. We expectcreative and independent analysis of the measurements, putting them in context with local, regional and global sources and sinks.
You have a Ph.D. in atmospheric/environmental sciences, physics or chemistry with a strong expertise in the analysis of large datasets and possibly atmospheric transport models. Candidates with an outstanding publication record and proven competencies in this field will be considered. Excellent programming skills and fluency in English are required; basic comprehension and oral expression skills in German are desirable.
