In our Laboratory Nanoscale Materials Science are two PhD positions available:

PhD position in Experimental Physics "Stochastic Atomic and Molecular Fluctuators and Resonators studied by SPM"

Atomic Force Microscopy has become a tool to map molecules adsorbed on surfaces with atomic resolution revealing the positions of the individual atoms and the length of the bonds with high precision.


In our project we intend to go beyond structural imaging, and explore the dynamics of molecules hopping between different surface states by thermal energy or by inelastic tunneling. In the latter case the stochastic motion of the molecules is above thermal equilibrium such that stochastic resonance phenomena can occur. The latter will be explored by appropriately engineering the tip-molecule interaction.

A candidate with a master degree in experimental Physics, and a strong background in surface science, in the operation of ultrahigh-vacuum systems, and preferably in UHV scanning tunneling or scanning force microscopy is desired for this position, but most importantly high motivation to study new physical phenomena at the nanoscale using unique and sophisticated experimental equipment is sought. Excellent communication skills and very good verbal and written knowledge in English are also expected.


We offer for this project a highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure, including two home-built UHV low temperature cantilever-based AFM systems. An experienced permanent research staff member, and a postdoc will supervise the research work of the two PhD students. This group is further integrated in the Empa Laboratory for Nanoscale Material Science conducting a large number of other basic and applied science projects in various research fields.  As a PhD student you will be embedded in a much larger multidisciplinary international research team.
