The Biomolecules at Surfaces group within the Biointerfaces lab is looking for a PhD student focusing on a detailed understanding of virus– material interactions for the design of new materials for water purification. At Empa you will have access to complementary world-class facilities and expertise for materials design and characterization.
PhD student (focusing on virus – material interactions)
Your Mission and Responsibilities
Design bioactive surfaces with high binding affinity to viruses through biochemical and physical methods.
Characterize nanostructure and function of the new materials using routine and non-routine methods (i.e. biochemical assays, scattering methods).
Collaborate with project partners in the field of ceramics and process engineering to advance functional surfaces.
Communicate results at meetings, conferences and through high-impact publications.
A Master’s degree from a University in a relevant field (biophysical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry).
Strong interest in biomaterials, surface chemistry as well as bioanalytical and biophysical techniques (i.e. electron microscopy, scattering methods, spectroscopy).
Fluency in English (written and oral) is a must, German would be a benefit.
