Organic trace gases, such as VOCs and CFCs contribute to global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion and tropospheric air pollution. Their continuous analysis in the atmosphere is an important tool for air quality assessment, atmospheric chemistry and for evaluating the compliance of international agreements. Within this context, Empa performs long-term measurements of organic trace gases at several sites in Switzerland.
The open position comprises two main tasks. First, Empa is responsible for developing web-based data analysis tools for checking the quality of the VOC data at European measurement sites within the European infrastructure ACTRIS. This involves close collaboration with other measurement sites and the central European calibration laboratory. Second, we are currently developing and implementing gas chromatography / time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) for high-precision analysis of organic trace gases (VOCs, CFCs). Here, the successful candidate will develop tools for the efficient analysis and handling of the large data sets. Furthermore, the candidate will support the team in the further development of the measurement technique in the lab and in the scientific interpretation of the data.
We are looking for a postdoc or a scientist with:
excellent skills in measurement data analysis, processing and programming.
a solid background in analytical chemistry, environmental science or a related field.
experience in gas chromatography or mass spectrometry, and in related computer control and data analysis is a plus.
