Our group develops optical sensors and polymer optical fibers (POFs) via microfluidics for the monitoring of several relevant bio-markers, such as pH, glucose, ammonia as well as different sorts of environmental factors, such as pressure, humidity and temperature to be employed in both sensing and therapy applications.The PhD student will be responsible for the synthesis of optical nanostructures by using different microfluidic setup and their subsequent embedding in multi-functional fibers. Experience in polymer synthesis, nanomaterial synthesis or cross-linking chemistry is mandatory. Previous experience with microfluidic synthesis is a bonus, but not required.
We are looking for motivated candidates with a strong background in the supra-mentioned topics, ability to work in a multidisciplinary field and open to learn new topics. The PhD candidates need to be proficient in spoken and written English and have a Master's degree.
The work will be carried out at Empa St. Gallen under supervision of Dr. Claudio Toncelli. The position will be available from Sept. 2017 with planned project duration of three to four years.
