Join Our Team as a Research Assistant in Polymer Processing and Sustainability
The Institute of Polymer Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is looking for a motivated and dedicated Research Assistant to support our activities in the field of polymer processing and sustainability. As part of a dynamic and interdisciplinary team, you will contribute to applied research and development projects at the interface of material science, process engineering, and environmental responsibility. - Participate in experimental research involving compounding, injection molding, extrusion, additive manufacturing and thermoforming
- Conduct thermal and mechanical analyses using DSC, TGA, DMA, and tensile testing (Zwick)
- Operate laboratory equipment such as kneaders, compounder, press, planetary mixers, and hand injection molding machine
- Assist in material development, structure–property relationship analysis, and small-scale processing trials
- Design and conduct experiments, independently analyze results, and document findings in a structured and visual form (Excel, PowerPoint)
- Support the preparation of internal presentations, scientific posters, and graphic materials for conferences and reports
- Collaborate closely with project teams and actively contribute to meetings and knowledge exchange
- Conducting and evaluating independently literature researches
Your profile
- Proven hands-on experience with:
Thermal analysis techniques: DSC, TGA, DMA
Mechanical testing (e.g., tensile strength testing on Zwick machines)
Operating lab-scale processing equipment (press, kneader, mixer, compounder)
- Good understanding of sustainable and biodegradable polymers (e.g., PLA, PBS) and recycling
- Strong skills in data analysis and visualization (Excel, MATLAB)
- Familiarity with 3D printing and CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX)
- Previous experience in scientific research or lab internships required
- Excellent English language proficiency (minimum B2 certificate required) - An official language certificate must be provided as part of the application
- German is an advantage but not mandatory
