The Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research in the area of Microbiome Research (NCCR Microbiomes) brings together a multi-institutional and interdisciplinary research consortium to work on computational, experimental and clinical microbiome systems. Combining modelling, engineering and synthetic approaches, we strive to understand the unifying principles of microbiome function, develop tools to diagnose microbiome status, and devise strategies to intervene and restore imbalanced microbiomes. To achieve these goals, the scope of the NCCR Microbiomes encompasses microbial communities in humans, animals, plants, as well as in natural (soil), industrial (wastewater) and synthetic systems.
To support these highly collaborative projects, we are seeking a bioinformatician/computational biologist to join our team based at ETH Zürich. More detailed information about the NCCR Microbiomes can be found on the project website: https://nccr-microbiomes.ch/
Job tasks:
- Application of modern biostatistics and modelling methods (including machine learning) to large scale datasets. These include, but are not limited to, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data
- Analysis, integration and visualization of different types of omics data
- Development of algorithms and tools for biological data analysis
- Coordination across projects, communication with and presentation of your work to NCCR Microbiomes project partners
- Support effective data management
Required qualifications:
- PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, computational biology or related field
- Demonstrated experience in the modeling and analysis of genomic and multi-omic data (e.g., metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, meta-proteomics, meta-metabolomics)
- Excellent knowledge of biological/statistical data analysis methods
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix command line and high-performance computing environments
- Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills
- Proficient programming skills (e.g., Python, R, UNIX/bash scripting) with 1+ years of relevant experience
The following additional qualifications may be advantageous:
- Expertise in statistical approaches to integrate multi-omics data.
- Background in microbial population/comparative genomics, microbial ecology.
- Experience with genome-scale metabolic modelling.
