To support and reinforce the scientific relation activities of the Executive Directors, SIB is looking for a:

The successful candidate will facilitate the establishment and follow-up of scientific activities and partnerships with national and international stakeholders. In particular, the incumbent will take on the function of Node Coordinator for ELIXIR-Switzerland.

The Scientific Relations Manager's main responsibilities will include:

  • Proactively identify opportunities for SIB to participate in national and international scientific activities, contact the relevant SIB groups and facilitate starting the collaborations
  • Coordinate the planning and execution of ELIXIR-related activities in the Swiss node in collaboration with the Heads of Node and the Technical and Training Coordinators, as well as the concerned SIB group leaders
  • Coordinate communication and collaboration on ELIXIR-related matters within SIB, with the ELIXIR Hub in Hinxton, UK, and with the other ELIXIR nodes, including participation in the ELIXIR Node Coordinator meetings
  • Coordinate communication and collaboration with other international bodies
  • Contribute to scientific reporting and presentations by the SIB Directors, as well as to documents related to the SIB Directors' activities and to science or science policy matters
  • Thanks to a proactive approach based on the services SIB teams can provide, collaborate to help identify and set up collaborations with private companies
  • Develop impact evaluation reports to help promote SIB activities
  • Travel within Switzerland and Europe as required to collaborate with internal and external partners (up to 20%, mostly day trips)

The position is permanent and part-time based in Lausanne and with home-office flexibility. The percentage of employment may increase in the future.


ELIXIR is an intergovernmental organization that brings together life science resources from across Europe. These resources include databases, software tools, training materials, cloud storage and supercomputersThe goal of ELIXIR is to coordinate these resources so that they form a single infrastructure. This infrastructure makes it easier for scientists to find and share data, exchange expertise, and agree on best practices. Ultimately, it will help them gain new insights into how living organisms work.

ELIXIR includes 22 members and one Observer, bringing together over 220 research organizations. It was founded in December 2013 and began implementing its first scientific programme in 2014. It is currently implementing its second five-year scientific programme.

An ELIXIR Node is a collection of research institutes within a member country. ELIXIR Nodes run the resources and services that are part of ELIXIR. Each Node has a lead institute that oversees the work of that Node. SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is the Swiss Node of ELIXIR. The Joint Executive Directors of SIB are the Heads of Nodes of ELIXIR-Switzerland.


SIB is the largest national node within the ELIXIR consortium. As a provider of various renowned bioinformatics resources, expertise and teaching activities to the international life science community, 

SIB interacts with ELIXIR at several levels:

Profile requirements
  • A PhD within a relevant area such as bioinformatics or molecular biology; applicants with education at master level in a relevant area combined with significant experience and insight in life science research can also be considered
  • An understanding of, and interest in, research infrastructure
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in bioinformatics
  • Good knowledge of SIB and its groups is a plus
  • Good knowledge of the Swiss and international life science ecosystem, including international and European initiatives; A strong network in this domain is a plus
  • Familiarity with ELIXIR is a plus, preferably by having participated in ELIXIR activities
  • Experience with working in cross-institutional projects, preferably including several countries is an asset
  • Excellent command of the English language, both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, European research programmes and policy is a plus.
