Job Description
The SIB Training group is in charge of developing the bioinformatics skills and competences of bioinformaticians, life and health scientists, from academia and industry, by coordinating, developing and providing high quality training courses.

Working in close collaboration with SIB groups and its members, the SIB Training group organizes over 50 bioinformatics and data science courses per year involving computational biology methods, statistics, machine learning, computing techniques, as well as the analysis, management and reproducibility of biological data. These courses, which have an emphasis on practical learning, are open to any scientist in life sciences from Switzerland and worldwide.

To reinforce the SIB Training team in Lausanne, we are seeking a Training Coordinator (50%). This is a 12-month 50% position, with a possibility of extension depending on external funding. Starting date as soon as possible.

Your responsibilities

The main focus is on developing training courses and training activities to support life and health scientists, developers and bioinformaticians. Responsibilities include:
  • Develop and deliver training courses in Switzerland and in Europe. Development involves liaison with hosts and trainers to ensure that course programmes meet the needs of their target audiences. Delivery involves managing training administrative, organizational, communication and logistic aspects. Some of this work may be done in association with external partners (Swiss PhD programmes, Swiss Universities, ELIXIR).
  • Contributing to the collection and analysis of training statistics.
  • Monitoring and responding to feedback from courses for the purposes of quality control.
  • Proactively promoting training opportunities on social media, websites and through other available channels.
  • Attending regular group meetings, working in collaboration with group and SIB colleagues, and reporting about training activities.
  • Assisting others to develop their training skills, both within SIB and ELIXIR.

The post reports to the SIB Training Team Leader. It involves substantial autonomy and requires extensive interactions with others at and beyond SIB. The role may involve national travel.


Profile requirements
Our ideal candidate has a PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or a related subject, and enthusiasm for training. A proven work experience in training coordination, teaching, training, outreach or training facilitation, at university or elsewhere, is needed. Experience with project management, coordinating multiple events, or the ability to complete full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor and evaluate) would be a plus.

In addition to being highly self-motivated, your must have excellent organisational, written, communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work well as part of a team. Your ability to respect deadlines is essential. Candidates with a desire to work in an international environment are encouraged to apply, and experience of working with multiple partners from different countries across Europe would be a distinct advantage. Some experience/knowledge of website maintenance and the use of a CMS, LMS and web delivery tools is a plus.

You should have excellent computer skills, including proficiency with office software, and experience with web content generation (e.g., Moodle, HTML, markdown).
