Job tasks
As a member of the sciCORE system administration team, you will be responsible for the configuration and operation of the primary large-scale scientific data storage systems (IBM Spectrum Scale / GPFS) of the University of Basel. Our successful candidate will have the in-depth technical knowledge to configure, integrate, deploy and administrate the IBM Spectrum Scale storage infrastructure. S/he will take appropriate measures to secure and protect the data (Spectrum Protect / TSM) and will ensure appropriate monitoring to identify and address issues in a timely fashion. S/he is experienced in performing the necessary system administration tasks for IBM Spectrum Scale systems such as configuration management, problem determination and resolution, software/firmware upgrades, implementation of monitoring and support tools.
As the center of scientific computing at Basel university, sciCORE addresses the needs of a broad spectrum of research areas, with a large volume of unique data originating from the life-science domains (proteomics, genomics, imaging, structural biology, clinical research data). Hence, the storage architecture needs to meet the different requirements of these projects with respect to performance, volume, data security, and data protection (encryption). Our successful candidate can demonstrate experience in supporting computational scientific research projects, including planning, implementation and optimization of storage architectures for heterogeneous research requirements.

The sciCORE team operates the central, large-scale and high-speed scientific data storage systems and HPC infrastructure. Our computing environment consists of a Linux cluster with ~8000 cores (including GPUs), ~3 PB storage (IBM Spectrum Scale, BeeGFS), a virtualization environment (XenServer) for internal management and hosting of web-accessible scientific services, and a state-of-the-art cluster management environment (Ansible, Foreman, EasyBuild, XenServer, InfluxDB, Check_MK, Univa Grid Engine).
sciCORE closely collaborates with the central IT-services of the University of Basel as well as nationally with the SIB Swiss Institute of Informatics and other IT core facilities. Our new collaborator will thus coordinate with our partners to help offering a consistent and competitive portfolio of IT solutions to our users, enabling them to perform their scientific research on highest international levels.
