Research Software Engineer – Scientific Software, Data Workflows and AI 60-80% (f/m/d)

Become part of a small and passionate group in charge of building state-of-the-art Science IT capabilities at WSL. In a Research Software Engineer role, your main efforts will be dedicated to scientific software development and consulting, data workflows and reproducible data pipelines, with a focus on the responsible adoption of AI. You will provide expert guidance, training materials and hands-on support to researchers for developing scientific applications and computational workflows, while leading the standardization of tools, frameworks, best practices and methodologies within the WSL Science IT ecosystem. You will guide and support the responsible use of AI tools for scientific software development and advise on the proper scientific use of machine learning algorithms and AI. By collaborating closely with the other Science IT profiles, you will ensure coherent services and consistent Science IT support for all researchers and will foster internal collaboration and knowledge exchange among Science IT users at WSL.

You possess a completed degree in software engineering, data science or in a scientific field (or comparable education and skills) with a minimum of two years of experience. Strong skills in professional research software engineering, with the ability to understand and write code in a variety of programming languages used in research (e.g., Python, R, C/C++, etc.) is mandatory. Experience in AI topics and research data workflows/pipelines is also necessary. The ideal profile is rounded up by an understanding of modern research data management practices and experience with modern AI tools for code development. Awareness of agile software development methods with short release cycles is essential for this position. Knowledge or interest in environmental research is also required. You enjoy collaborating closely with researchers, and you are a communicative, reliable, and team-oriented person with excellent English skills.
